Nursing Diploma (GNM) is likely to phase out by the year 2022

If it happens then 12th Arts & Commerce students may not be able to do GNM Course

Mohali 28th April

12th Arts and Commerce students now may not get the chance to do 3 years Nursing course i.e General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) as The Union Health Ministry may likely to roll back this three years Nursing diploma course by the year 2022 to raise the standard of nursing qualifications. The decision has gotpolarized opinion since the course produces about 1.2 lakh nurses a year and this decision could lead to a shortage of nurses, especially in the least developed states.

Dr. Anshu Kataria, Chairman, Aryans Institute of Nursing (AIN), Rajpura, Near Chandigarh said that we have 40 seats in GNM and 20 seats in ANM Course. This year the number of applicants for GNM Course has increased 4 times because of the chances of closure of GNM Course for 12th Arts students.

The GNM course is a three-year diploma which is open for non science backgrounds while B.Sc nursing is a four-year course with eligibility as 12th pass in science. Currently, on the Indian Nursing Council (INC) website, in India there are 2,902 GNM nursing schools. According to a recent notification of March 14 by the Council, the last admission for GNM courses will be done in 2020.

Kataria further added that if this happens then most of the 12th pass students of Non science background would not be able pursue GNM. Most of these students migrate to other countries like Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc after GNM Course and get very good remuneration in these Countries.
